Integrated Intermodal ties to penetrate Central Europe

Preface: This is 2nd series, followed by “Short cut in trade to Eastern Europe” last edition reported. Geographical merit and elementary facilities already explained on last article. In this edition, I am willing to focus on sister-ports surround Trieste port and intermodal transportation modes which linked to internal distribution net work and long road trucking mode beyond Alps mountains. Those affiliated supporting systems help this new route on successful logistic completion.

 Two sister’s port, Nogaro port & Monfalcone port, functionally supporting Trieste port

Trieste port is dreaming logistic Renaissance with big advantage on geographical location. However, Trieste port has been enclosed by high hills surrounded like back screens. Naturally, it has resulted neighbor ports, supporting in logistic function. Nogaro port and Monfalcone port are functionally support Trieste port under combined structure of one umbrella. Nogaro port has specialized in handling mines, ores, and ferrous materials with linking process of railway intermodal transportation. The port situated at riverside to be connected to internal destinations.   

The port depth is not deep as 7.5meter, the length of pier 180 meter, width with 22 meter. Over this port, Aussa Corno Industrial complex, producing ferrous goods and semi finished materials, utilize this port for logistics flow. The Nogaro port has big yard, 365,000 hectare for handling bulky freight of industrial purpose. It originated from Roman cannel and completed on 16th century, linking with Adrian sea. Ware house for custody of coils, fuel and steels are ready, handling 10,000 tonnage yearly. 

The Monfalcone port, nearby Nogaro port has been developed by T.O.Delta group who diversified logistics facilities including multi purposed terminal. It also may be called “sister of Trieste port”, majoring bulky freights, big sized steels, pulp, timber, Yachts and other industrial goods. Port depth of 12 meter, pier length of 1900 meter could satisfy the required condition for middle classed port big international ship landed. Big gantry crane installed for Lo-Lo system and tough freights oversized. Italian export small cars and yacht also handled in this port. It functionally supports perfect logistic flow on Trieste route, as specific port for hardware cargoes. Therefore, these Nogaro port and Monfalcone port combined with Trieste port cordially cooperated for total solution on smooth logistic completion, as united port cluster.

 

Intermodal terminal connected internal destinations

On 1964 state government implemented Logistics complex project included logistic center, terminals, Ports, hinterland etc and Industrial manufacturing compound. In this connection, Friuli Terminal is one of project, as intermediate terminal to facilitate intermodal transfer, rail to truck or visa versa, having ware house on 24,000 square meter and CFS on 160,000 square meter in addition to Truck terminal, totally 460,000 square meter invested. Differentiated from conventional container type, TEU/FEU, another 30FT container called swap body has been used for space saved economically. Friuli terminal has mainly handling the freights to be connected with rail road for cost maximizing purpose. In other hand, Fernetti Intermodal Terminal specialized in trucking transportation to deliver containers to long distanced destination. Many of freight forwarders in amount of more than 60 have gathered, sorted and consolidated various LCL cargoes. 450 drivers are taking some rest at the terminal. Annually 200,000 trucks arrived and left, as one of biggest terminal on the way linked between South of Europe and Central Europe. Top management are proud that this terminal was qualified on ISO 9001 to impose every handling procedures. The terminal has been composed of 130,000 square metered parking lot and 30,000 square meter ware house. For holding freights at ware house, VAT will be waived for 6 months until the goods are sold. Beside warehouse, another railroad also constructed for shuttle transportation to Trieste port far from 18 km. Customs clearance procedure is ready in 24 hours operation with quarantine process for animals and plants. Other facilities for truck drivers; restaurants, hotels, stores, stationary are also provided.  

 

Gorizia Terminal at the border

To forward freights to neighbor country,  Gorizia Terminal has located at the border of Slovenia. Customs clearance and temporary custody of the freights this terminal has been used for multipurpose. Through this terminal the road connected to Venice, Milano & Bologna to the west and  Austria and Slovenia to the north. Transportation by road and railway both available. This terminal sized 600,000 square meter, keeps busy transaction for international trade.

“Proudly forwarding any freight sent from Asia to Eastern Europe”

Fernetti terminal is central station positioned on main southern European highway connected between Barcelona, Spain and Kiev, Ukraine, doing key role of intermodal transaction. With experience of Airline sales, Claudio Grim looks the pioneer to realize newly developed logistic route by Trieste port. Fernetti terminal check all freights and final arrangement to resend it to final destinations. He is very humorous and full of enthusiastic attitude on work, enabling break out any barriers, as no impossible thing in job.

Question) What is main business ?

Answer) Fernetti terminal is main logistic hub handling import-export commercial goods to/from Trieste port.  It is basic axis on south of European road way. In future, Fernetti terminal will do key role for trading with Asian countries.

Q) What transportation mode in operation?

A) Railroad to/from Trieste port to here. And storage, sorting, customs clearance, packing of freights will be done here before sending final destination by trucks. Road transportation is main business but providing multimodal, sea-rail-truck.  

Q) Let me know main market on your business?  

A) We handle lots of Russian bound freights. CIS countries, new independent countries are our markets.

Q) Can you figure out country wise by number of operating trucks ?  

A) Among international operation, 135,000 trucks for Russia, CIS, Balcan related, and 35,000 trucks for Turkey are divided in operation.

Q) Which destination mainly delivered?

A) Moscow, Kiev, Budapest, Minsk and Teheran….

Q) What kind of freight you handled?

A) Electronics items in importing goods including solar system, IC, Television set…and in exporting goods are mainly raw materials. 

Q) How long does it take time to Moscow?

A) Normally 24 hours needed if running by Hungarian express road. Fast delivery is comparative in transportation.

Q) What about Trucking charge ?

A) Railway cost for portion to Fernetti from Trieste port costs only Euro 30. For Moscow, EU3,200 ~3,600 is based on tariff rate of trucking charge. But actually, further Discount is common by case. EU 3,000 at current cost.

Q) I saw lots of freights originated from Turkey. Where it goes?

A) There are freights destined for immigrants who lived in Germany. Trieste port is normal entry port for those freights, after Belgrade route closed due to political dispute, by using Ro-Ro shipping mode.

Q) What is next year plan?

A) We have expanding network plan in next year. To provide further fast transportation to the Czech, Germany, Romania, Slovenia and other Europe countries, we have enlarge net work and cooperate each other for saving cost and time.
